In her TEDxUAlberta Talk, voice coach Tamara Beatty doesn’t just talk about how to sing or speak better; she unpacks something far more human: the power, and vulnerability, of letting your voice be heard.
Tamara tells the story of people who struggle to speak up for fear they fear how it will be received. She describes how years of tension, self-doubt, and criticism can quite literally live in our vocal cords, creating strain, tightness, or hesitation in our speech. But when someone learns to release that tension? When they connect with their authentic voice? Something profound happens. They don’t just sound better, they feel more free.
“Your voice carries not just sound, but your history, your fears, your courage. And when you work with your voice, you often end up working with yourself.”
We’ve all been there: the meeting where you wanted to speak up, but didn’t. The presentation where your voice cracked with nerves. The moment you questioned whether what you were saying even mattered.
And here’s the thing – those moments aren’t about mechanics. They’re about identity. Voice is the medium through which we are known.
Why Your Voice Matters—Beyond the Words
Tamara’s talk resonates so deeply because it reveals a truth we often overlook in professional and personal development: voice work is self-work.
Whether you’re a leader trying to rally your team, a seller pitching a new idea, or someone just learning to speak with confidence, how you use your voice matters.
The most powerful voices don’t sound perfect – they sound real. They carry emotion. They reflect the speaker’s belief in what they’re saying.
That kind of presence doesn’t come from talent alone. It comes from practice, reflection, and a safe space to try, stumble, and try again.
