Command of the Message is a value-based sales messaging methodology from Force Management. It gives go-to-market teams a shared way to describe the problems customers face, the outcomes they want, and how a solution delivers those outcomes. Sales leaders adopt it when reps sound different on every call and deals stall on price.

This guide covers what the framework includes, why it depends on practice, and how enablement teams get reps fluent enough to use it in live conversations.

What is Command of the Message?

Force Management defines Command of the Message as “being audible-ready to define your solutions to customer problems in a way that differentiates you from your competitors.” That definition comes from the company’s own explanation of the methodology.

The phrase “audible-ready” is the important part. An audible-ready rep can adjust when the buyer raises a new problem, brings in a skeptical stakeholder, or asks a question that skips half the deck.

Force Management positions the methodology as a full go-to-market program. On its sales message consulting page, the company says “The foundation is the customer-focused value framework.” The program moves from building that framework, to training cross-functional teams, to reinforcing the behaviors over time.

The core parts of the Value Framework

Every company builds its own version, but the vocabulary is shared. Teams that adopt the methodology tend to use these terms in deal reviews, coaching, and forecast calls.

• Value Framework. The reference document that holds a company’s value messaging. Force Management calls the workshop output the Value Messaging Framework, and it gives reps a guide to articulating value and differentiation.
• Before Scenario. The buyer’s current situation and the problems it creates for their business. Discovery is largely about getting the buyer to describe this in their own words.
• Positive Business Outcomes. The measurable results the buyer wants to reach. Strong reps tie every feature conversation back to one of these outcomes.
• Required Capabilities. What a solution must be able to do to get the buyer from the before scenario to those outcomes. Reps who shape the Required Capabilities early often shape the evaluation criteria too.
• Differentiators. Force Management says differentiating “means articulating how your specific solutions align tightly with the customer’s problems.” It also cautions reps against disparaging competitors.
• Proof points. Customer stories and evidence that make the claims credible. The methodology asks reps to use them consistently.

Teams that already use a qualification framework often run the two together. The Value Framework shapes what reps say about value, and a framework like MEDDPICC shapes how they qualify and forecast the deal.

Why value messaging only sticks with practice

Buyers give reps fewer chances to get the message right. In a Gartner survey of 632 B2B buyers, 61% of B2B buyers said they prefer an overall rep-free buying experience. The same research found that buyers still want seller input on questions that need context, such as whether a product fits their company.

So the conversations that do happen carry more weight. A rep has to hear the before scenario, connect it to an outcome, and name the right capability in the moment. Reading the Value Framework once in a workshop does not build that reflex.

The gap usually shows up a few weeks after training. Reps fall back into feature tours, managers do not have time to roleplay with everyone, and the framework becomes something people mention in deal reviews but rarely use on calls. Closing that gap is an enablement problem, and practice is the fix.

How to help reps practice Command of the Message

The goal of this training is fluency. Reps should be able to run discovery, frame value, and handle pushback using the framework without thinking about it. Here is a practice-first approach.

1. If your team has adopted Command of the Message, turn your company’s Value Framework into a rubric

Take the before scenarios, outcomes, and capabilities your team agreed on and write them as scoring criteria. Did the rep uncover the buyer’s current problem? Did they tie the conversation to a business outcome? Did they name a differentiator that matters to this buyer? Our guide to building AI roleplays around your sales methodology walks through this step in more detail.

2. Build personas for each buyer role

A CFO, a VP of operations, and an IT security lead each care about different outcomes. Reps need to practice the same message with each of them. In Yoodli, teams set each persona’s appearance, voice, and context, so the AI buyer pushes back the way that role would. Yoodli Personas run in text, video, and avatar formats.

3. Practice discovery before the pitch

Most of the framework depends on what the rep learns in discovery. Have reps run discovery roleplays where the AI buyer only reveals the before scenario if the rep asks good questions. Our post on discovery call practice covers how to set those scenarios up.

4. Certify the core value message

Once reps can run discovery, certify them on the core message for each product or segment. Every rep gets scored against the same rubric, and managers review only the attempts that need a human eye. Google Cloud used Yoodli to certify 15,000+ employees on a new GTM pitch. Harness used Yoodli AI roleplays to cut sales training review time by 75%.

5. Reinforce on real calls

Once a rep is certified, real calls show whether the message holds up with buyers. Yoodli Coach provides post-call coaching on calls recorded in Gong and Kaia and suggests new practice based on what it finds. That keeps the framework in use after the launch energy fades. How it compares with other value-based methodologies

The methodology belongs to the same family as other value-based approaches. Value selling also asks reps to anchor every conversation in the buyer’s business results. The difference is that Force Management’s approach comes with a defined vocabulary and a company-specific Value Framework, which makes it easier to coach and inspect across a large team.

The methodology also sits well alongside tools reps already use. Competitive battlecards, discovery guides, and talk tracks can all be rewritten in the language of the Value Framework so reps hear one consistent message across every resource. When a new product or pricing change ships, update the framework first and let every downstream resource follow from it.

One common mistake is treating the framework as a marketing document. The Value Framework should read the way a strong rep talks to a buyer. If reps would never say a line out loud, rewrite it before it goes into a rubric or a roleplay. Frontline managers are the best reviewers for this, because they hear the gap between the framework and real calls every week.

How to measure whether the message is landing

Force Management suggests a few measures of impact in its explanation of the methodology: shorter sales cycles, C-level language and access, and consistent use of customer proof points. Those are useful lagging indicators.

Enablement teams also need leading indicators. Track rubric scores on each part of the framework, the share of reps certified, and how scores move between the first attempt and the last. Low scores on one criterion, such as tying features to outcomes, point to the next coaching focus. Our sales enablement solutions page shows how teams connect practice data to readiness.

FAQ

What is Command of the Message in sales?

Command of the Message is a value-based sales messaging methodology from Force Management. It gives sales and go-to-market teams a shared framework for describing customer problems, the business outcomes buyers want, and how their solution delivers those outcomes. The goal is for reps to be audible-ready, so they can position value clearly in any conversation.

Who created Command of the Message?

Force Management created the methodology. The company delivers it as a go-to-market program that starts with building a customer-focused Value Framework, then trains cross-functional teams and reinforces the behaviors over time. Many companies adapt the framework to their own products, segments, and buyer roles during that process.

What are Required Capabilities in sales?

Required Capabilities are what a solution must be able to do for the buyer to reach the outcomes they want. Reps uncover them during discovery by connecting the buyer’s current problems to their goals. When reps define Required Capabilities early, they help the buyer set evaluation criteria that reflect the problems they described.

How do you reinforce Command of the Message after training?

You reinforce it with regular practice and coaching on real calls. Turn the Value Framework into a scoring rubric, have reps practice with AI buyer personas, certify them on the core message, and review recorded calls for framework use. Repeating this cycle keeps the vocabulary in daily use long after the workshop.

Making the message part of every call

The framework works when reps can use it under pressure, with a real buyer and an unexpected question. That takes the same thing any skill takes, which is repetition with feedback. Build the rubric from your Value Framework, give reps realistic buyers to practice with, and keep coaching after the launch so the message becomes how your team sells.
